This is not a historical definition of liberal. It’s not an etymological definition. I hope it’s not a temporal definition. It’s my belief—and it’s the set of values that drives so many good people and shapes so many strong communities. It’s how I try to live liberally . . and I hope over the next 538 ideas, tips, and steps, it may become how you, more consciously, live liberally too. What You’re Going to Find in This Book I fully believe that every day, in some of the most routine activities, you can be living out your progressive values.

All the neighbors kept an eye on each other. The grandmothers on the block sat on their stoops and shouted to the kids when they were being too rambunctious. And the kids—rather than ignoring some old lady yelling at them—listened. Why? Because that old lady knew their parents. This community supervision is celebrated by Jane Jacobs in her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities. Incidental policing provides a sense of safety. It’s also self-perpetuating: if those old ladies needed anything, the kids would be there to help.

There are plenty of reasons why private schools can be attractive. You might be in an area where the public schools are underfunded or where drug activity gets in the way of learning. You may want your children to have a religious education, or they may have special needs that a private school can meet. I went to a private high school, and had an incredible experience; I also know that it allowed me privileges that not everyone shared. It’s a complicated question, because parents want what’s best for their children, as they should.
